Rameswaram: The ‘World Earth Day’ has motivated a group of ten scuba divers including two women to swim underwater using scuba-diving equipment in the sea off Mandapam near here and removed 25-kg plastics in just an hour.

This impressive feat was achieved under the leadership of the Mandapam forest department ranger Mr. Sathish. The team also included foresters Gnanasekaran, Anandan, besides scuba-divers Aravind and Deepika, and students of Forest Research Institute, Madhumahesh and Rukmini, official sources said here.

In view of the environmental hazards posed by dumping plastics, particularly to marine ecology close to the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, sources said the team has decided to undertake similar scuba-diving cleaning exercises once every month to clear the plastics beneath the sea surface in this area.
