Karnataka: Water shortage delays YTPS power generation

Raichur: Although ready for operation for the last few months, the 800 MW Unit I of the Yermarus Thermal Power Station (YTPS), has not been able to take off with the river Krishna drying up in the absence of rain. Scotching reports that the generation of power by Unit I was being delayed due to lack of coal supply by the Union Ministry of Coal, YTPS officials said it had been allotted the coal required from the Western Coal Fields, and the only hold-up was lack of water.
Oil synchronization of the plant’s Unit II, also of 800 MW capacity, was underway, and was likely to be completed by the second week of June, they revealed. Both units of YTPS have together been allotted 3.6 TMC of water. A joint-venture of the Karnataka Power Corporation and the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, the power plant has been set up at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore.
A state-of-the-art plant, it uses water and coal optimally to produce the maximum electricity. Work on building it began in 2010 and was completed in March 2015.
