Hyderabad: Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu was highly critical of elected representatives defecting to other parties without resigning their seats. He said that a person had the choice to join any party, but they should quit their seat the evening they resign from a particular party, he said.

“Defections are not good for democracy,” he said. Mr Naidu’s statements assume significance in view of the TRS encouraging mass defections of Congress and TD legislators who kept their Assembly seats.

He said that caste, religion or money should not be the criteria to judge politicians, but their character and nature.

Mr Naidu said that the BJP chose Mr Ram Nath Kovind as its Presidential poll nominee based on his calibre, character, conduct and contribution in public service.

The Opposition was talking on caste terms, which was unfortunate, he said. “Why did the Opposition did not field Mrs Meira Kumar for the presidency in place of Ms Pratibha Patil earlier? Why is that they are fielding her now? This shows the importance they give to such communities,” he said.

Mr Naidu also lashed out at dynasty politics, which he felt was not good for the country.
