Madurai: Documentary film maker Divya Bharathi was today arrested and released on conditional bail in a case that was filed in 2009, during her college days, for participating in a student protest in front of the Government Rajaji Hospital demanding the safety of Dalit students. Another youth Nizamuddin was also arrested along with her.

Divya, who had directed a documentary film Kakoos (Toilet) on the plight of manual scavengers, did not appear for two hearings in the district court in connection with the 2009 case, a police source disclosed.

Divya, along with Nizamuddin, had protested demanding improvement in safety and infrastructure facilities for students in the Scheduled Caste Hostel in Madurai since a student there died due to a snake bite.

As Divya did not appear for the hearings, the Court issued an arrest warrant. Following which Mathichiyam police arrested her and Nizamuddin and produced them before Judicial Magistrate Court II judge, Sakthivelu.

The court released the duo on conditional bail with Divya and Nuzamuddin having to report at the Mathichiyam police station for the next one week. However, Divya claimed that she did not appear in the court for the case because she was not served summons.
