Teachers always create indelible impression among their students and they listen carefully what their teachers says.
BENGALURU: City Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun has called upon heads of various schools across the city to spread awareness among students about environmental conservation, cleanliness and getting the city rid of plastic menace.
While presiding over a meeting of school heads at Malleswaram IPP Centre in city on Wednesday, she said that children spend most of their time in schools than their home.
“Teachers always create indelible impression among their students and they listen carefully what their teachers says. It is high time for teachers to sensitize their students over issues such as minimizing water usage, promote use of eco-friendly Ganesha idols, scientific segregation of dry and wet waste, prevention of dengue, chikungunya and other vector-borne diseases, she said.
She said that BBMP has conducting rallies of school children in all its 8 zonal limits to spread awareness among people on these issues. Such rallies were held successfully in all 44 wards of South Zone limits.
It will hold similar rallies in West Zone on forthcoming Saturday and in East Zone on August 3. Students of all BBMP schools, government aided and private will take part in this rally.
Plastic-free city
She said the BBMP had on July 15 begun a drive aimed to make the city free from plastic.
A team of health inspectors were paying surprise visits to shops on various commercial streets, seizing and penalizing vendors for using banned plastic wraps, covers, cups, plates and other plastic materials. They seized 13 quintals of plastic materials and had collected penalty amounts of `25 lakh during this drive.
Soak pits
Highlighting the measures taken by BBMP to educate people on water literacy, following drinking water scarcity in various places, the Mayor further said that city civic body was already constructing soak pits on white-topped roads.
She said she had discussed with BBMP Commissioner for construction of similar pits in the premises of BBMP and in all parks of the city as such activities helps for rejuvenation of underground water table.
Waste segregation
Gangambike further said that a fresh tender has been floated for waste segregation. It is mandatory for households to segregate dry and wet waste and they must give the same to pourakarmikas from September 1.
