Hyderabad: Despite using SSL, while the Centre battles giving private secure certificates to third parties, Google shames state government websites for not crawling the web through secure channel. The browsers are labeling all sites, including telangana.gov.in, aponline.gov.in, as 'not secure.'

In the era of cyber attacks, encryption is something that web users should expect by default. If your website in the URL is not using HTTPS by default, then you're not taking privacy seriously.

In the URL bar the connections will display as "Not secure". This name and shame methodology began from July, through which Google wants to keep users informed about the safety of their connection.

Some of the websites include that of city police, IT department among others.

HTTP sites display a small icon that you could click for more information; if you did, it read "Your connection to this site is not secure. You should not enter any sensitive information on this site (for example, passwords or credit cards), because it could be stolen by attackers."

Mr Kiran Chandra General Secretary of Free Software Movement of India said "It is simple for middlemen or hackers to get the passwords putting people in a compromising situation. Even though these are government websites, it happens go through a lot of layers before it reaches server. So in any of the layers in between, it is possible to compromise details of people if you use http. It should be made mandatory to make all these https".
