Hyderabad: Class X students beaten up by teacher
The girls failed to do their reading assignment.
HYDERABAD: A class X student called Chandrika and another girl were brutally beaten by their Telugu teacher B. Yashwanth in Krishnaveni Talent School, near Uppal, on Friday for not doing their reading assignment. This is the fifth case of corporal punishment in schools in the last couple of months. Recently, a LKG student was also severely beaten up for not concentrating on the matter written on the blackboard.
Educational experts have said that the increase in corporal punishment in schools was making it evident that the Right to Education Act was continually being violated. In Friday’s incident, the school’s CCTV footage shows the Telugu teacher asking the girls, who were sitting in the last bench to say the ‘Nepadyam’ holding a text book in his hand. Upon not answering correctly, the teacher started beating the girls indiscriminately. One of the girls, Chandrika, mentioned that after she went home she had breathing problems and fell unconscious.
The worried parents took her to a hospital and the doctors said that her blood pressure had fallen after the incident. Speaking to the this newspaper, Chandrika said, “I had forgotten to take the Telugu text book to school, so I could not read the homework. I mentioned the same to the teacher and asked permission for a couple of minutes to read. But, Sir did not give me time and I could not say it. He started beating me. Even my father has not beaten me since childhood. I felt really ashamed in class.”
J. Radhika, Chandrika’s mother mentioned that her child came home very weak on Friday evening. “Upon enquiry she mentioned what had happened and soon lost consciousness. We took her to a hospital. This is not the way a class X girl should be treated in school.”The parents along with the child went and complained to the school management the next day. The teacher, in turn said that he had not beaten the students that severely. The management suspended the teacher after verifying the CCTV footage.
