Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister, Dr G Parameshwar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, on Thursday gave BBMP officials time till Saturday to fill all remaining potholes in the city.
Warning that the joint commissioners of the eight BBMP zones would be held responsible if the potholes were not filled, he said he would accept no excuse for any omissions. The Deputy CM informed reporters about his strict directive to the BBMP after a review meeting during the day.
Mayor Gangambike told Deccan Chronicle later that as on Tuesday, there were 626 potholes in the city and the BBMP Commissioner planned to fill them by Saturday.
Asked how there could be so few potholes in a city covering over 800 sq. kms, she gave a lengthy explanation referring to the different categories they came under. “There are three types of potholes. First there are those which are caused due to the wear and tear of the road. Then there are the potholes which are found on roads getting ready for asphalting.
"And the third kind are those found in the 110 villages absorbed into the BBMP some years ago. Here there are either no roads or just mud roads,”she explained, adding that the BBMP filled only the first category of potholes and ignored those that were on roads due for asphalting.
“But the petitioners, who have gone to court, have taken into account potholes in all three categories. We should have conveyed this properly to the court through our counsel,” she said.
The Mayor was confident that the potholes identified by the civic body would be filled by Saturday. “The joint commissioners will personally monitor the progress in their respective zones,” she maintained.
