Chennai: City police on Saturday registered an FIR under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, a day after a video of men purportedly harassing female fans of the North East United Football Club went viral on the social media. The incident is said to have happened when the football teams, Chennaiyin FC and North East United, played at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Chennai as part of the Indian Super League tournament last Thursday.

While the home side managed to win the game, the behaviour of the fans has not done any good to the reputation. The video had already created a furore on social media with actor John Abraham, owner of the North East United team issuing an official statement on the team's Facebook page, stating “To the fans who troubled her, I will call you fake fans because I know that Abhishek or myself would never condone this behaviour from our own true fans. I will find you and make sure you are punished and apologise for your behaviour.”

Meanwhile, the Periamet police on Saturday registered the FIR against unidentified individuals based on a complaint from Krishnadeep Menon, a representative of the Chennaiyin FC, said a police officer.

While the one-minute video clip doesn't give a clear picture of what exactly unfolded at the stadium, police said that they would trace the men in the picture and enquire them. A photograph from the grab was released by the city police who have also sought public help to trace the person. People with information shall contact- Periamet police Inspector 9498142616, Assistant Commissioner (Vepery) - 9498126870 or Deputy Commissioner (Kilpauk) - 9498122722.
