Bengaluru: Flyovers shut for two-wheelers on December 31
The move is part of city police's measures to maintain law and order during NYE celebrations.
Bengaluru: If two-wheeler riders are planning to indulge in drag racing, wheelies and other stunts on December 31 night, they should think twice before taking their bikes out on the roads, as the city traffic police have formed special teams to keep a tight vigil on high-speed stretches. The police are shutting down all flyovers in the city for two-wheelers from 10 pm till early hours of January 1.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Hithendra said, “For now, we have decided that the flyovers will be closed for two-wheelers from 10 pm on December 31 till early hours of January 1. It is to avoid any untoward incidents and to curb motorists from indulging in stunt riding.”
He said, “Even high-speed stretches like the Outer Ring Road, Old Madras Road and other roads will be under watch. Toll officials on Nice Road will also be informed to keep a watch on motorists performing stunts or indulging in reckless driving. Our priority is to ensure that there are no fatalities.”
Another senior police officer said, “We have already started keeping a check on these stretches where chances of motorists indulging in stunts are high. The jurisdictional traffic police have been asked to form special teams comprising two-three police personnel and to patrol busy roads and to keep a check on rash driving. The flyovers are the most preferred for stunt performers. We have banned the two-wheeler movement on these flyovers.”
Another officer said, “On the other hand, we have intensified drunk driving checks which started from December 23 and will go on till January 1. We will also not let two-wheeler riders to gather or ride in groups. The traffic police along with the law and order personnel will constantly patrol the city roads to avoid fatalities. We will also erect zig-zag barricades across all the major junctions.”
He said, “For now this is our plan. But we have a final meeting with the top brass and where more rules will be included for the December 31 night.”
