KOLLAM: CPM Politbureau member M.A. Baby slipped into the role of a dubbing artist as he read out clearly the narration for a documentary film ‘Vanishing Island’ that portrays the story of a sinking island and a few human beings who live on it.

The documentary discusses the environmental issues of Munroe Thuruthu here and the after effects of the sinking on the people. Directed and scripted by D. Dhanasumod, a journalist working in Delhi, the documentary narrated in English and Malayalam is in the post production phase.

“The idea of making a documentary took shape during one of my visits to Munroe Thuruthu years back. During the shooting of the film over several weeks during which we lived with those people, we came across several heartrending incidents like people leaving the place because they could not find land even to cremate the dead. The financially stable afford to find new houses outside the sinking island but the destitute are left with no option but to stay. We have even seen human excreta floating on the water that filled their houses. I wanted to expose the terrible issues of those people and hence the documentary,” Dhanasumod told DC.

The documentary is produced by the Sasthra Sahitya Parishad Delhi forum and people’s initiative for progressive empowering reform (PIPER). The camera work is by A. Muhammad, Rakesh is the sound recordist, and editing is done by R.V. Rinju under the supervision of B. Ajith Kumar. Malayalam version of the documentary having a duration of 22 minutes will be released soon.
