Hyderabad: Some 200 post-graduate students held a demonstration at Gandhi Medical College on Wednesday, pleading for cancellation of a proposal from private medical colleges to hike the fees by three times for post-graduate courses.
There are 1,400 post graduate seats in Telangana. Of them, 350 seats are in convener quota. As per the proposal, the existing fees for post-graduate course in the convener quota totals Rs 3.2lakh per annum.
This is to be increased to Rs 7 to Rs 10 lakh per month. Dr G Srinivas, junior doctor, explained, “If this fee hike takes place, then the cost of doing PG for these 350 students will be Rs 30 lakh for three years, which is high. It will not be affordable for many students. We urge the government to ignore the proposal and have approached the health minister Dr Laxma Reddy with a representation.”
