Chennai: Six MPs and three former parliamentarians, who had retired from the Rajya Sabha last year, will be awarded ‘Sansad Ratna Awards’ for their outstanding performance in Parliament.

Prime Point Foundation, a city-based NGO, and eMagazine Presense has been presenting the awards to parliamentarians, who excel in question hour and during debates, for the past few years based on a suggestion given by late President Abdul Kalam.

Kerala Governor Justice P. Sathasivam will award the meritorious parliamentarians at a glittering function at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras on Saturday, Prime Point Foundation chief K Srinivasan told a press conference here on Friday.

Parliamentarians from Maharashtra topped the list with 5 MPs being selected for the honour, while none of Tamil Nadu figured in the list.

Shrirang Appa Barne (Mavel), Rajeev Shankar Rao Satav (Hingoli), Dhananjay Bhimrao Mahadik (Kolhapur), Dr Heena Vijayakumar Gavit (Nadurbar) and Sanjay Nirupam (Rajya Sabha) have been selected for the honour. Except Mr Nirupam, the remaining is from Lok Sabha.

Bhartruhari Mahtab (Cuttack in Odisha), N.K Premachandran, (Kollam in Kerala), K.N Balagopal, (Kerala) and Dr T. N Seema, (Kerala) are the others who will be honoured on Saturday.

The three parameters on which the Parliamentarians are being selected for the honour are their performance in debates, moving private members bill and press for questions in the Parliament,” Mr Srinivasan said.
