KOZHIKODE: “A rigid system for studies was never my cup of tea,” says the CBSE Class 12 Computer Science regional topper Nanda Vinod. "I was neither pressurised on academics nor given worries of marks by parents. It was the freedom to open my books according to my choice that gave me confidence." This regional topper, a student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kannur, scored 99.2 per cent marks.

In Mathematics and Physics, two of her favourite subjects, she scored 100 marks, whereas in Computer Science and Chemistry it's 99 and English 98.  According to the school authorities, this is one  of the best scores in its history. She aspires to do her engineering in any of the national institutes like Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology or Indian Institute of Technology.

“My preference is to go out of the state, because I believe the more you travel, meet new people, culture and systems, your knowledge grows,” she said. "The only thing I want the parents out there to know is that never pressurise your kids, as studies should never be a burden. Instead, they should get the freedom to learn subjects in its best possible way. I would say, the quality time given for studies is just the reflection of my marks now."  Her mother Sindhu R. Menon is the Physics teacher at KV Kannur and father Vinod Vasudevan a civil engineer. Her younger sister Niranjana studies in the same school.
