9000 kg polluted fish seized in Aryankavu

KOLLAM: In yet another major haul, over ,9000 kilograms of formalin-laced fish including prawns were seized from Aryankavu check post on Tuesday. The inspection was conducted by Food Safety department as part of ‘Operation Sagar Rani’. The fish was meant to be distributed in Kochi and Ettumanoor.

“In the preliminary inspection, the fish brought in lorries from Tamil Nadu have been found to have laced with formalin. The seized fish have been kept in a cold storage for further procedures. The department will conduct further inspections in fish markets and storage facilities to check the selling of stale fish,” K. Ajith Kumar, assistant commissioner food safety department, told Deccan Chronicle.  The department has arranged private storage facilities to store the fish. Further action including destroying the fish will be taken after availing the detailed test results, Mr. Ajith added.
