BENGALURU: There are a lot of stigmas associated with vitiligo, a condition also called as leukoderma where the skin loses its pigmentation.

With an intention to create awareness about the condition, Bangalore chapter of Indian Association of Dermatologists, venereologists and leprologists have flagged off a campaign where a mobile van with banners and display screens, heads to various hospitals in the city.

Sharing details, Dr Leelavathy, Professor and Head, Dermatology Bangalore Medical College, who is also the President of Bangalore Dermatology Society said, “People have a belief that the vitiligo spreads by touching. They also think that this disease has no cure.”

She said that vitiligo can be treated with options like phototherapy. “We also have advanced surgical treatment methods including skin grafts from the person’s own tissues. So the patients need not worry and live their life with dignity,” she explained.

Through our campaigns we are educating the masses about the myths associated with vitiligo and making them aware of the treatment options available, Dr Leelavathy said.
