Chennai: Dr S. Sowmya, a distinguished Carnatic vocalist, chosen for Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy, is thrilled and owes it to her guru S. Ramanathan and her father.

Speaking to DC, Sowmya said though she is happy and thrilled, she is aware of the responsibility bestowed upon  her.  “I grew up listening to stalwarts’ concerts and watching them win big awards. I have always been in awe of our music season and kutcheris held during Margazhi,” she added.

When asked about her pioneering research on the tonal stability of mridangam, she said, “Being an IITian, I wanted to do a scientific study of the percussion instrument which would be of help to instrument players.”

The eminent musician also says she enjoyed judging contestants in music talent show on TV. “It was a different and unique experience. I feel such contests on TV, unlike the regular competitions, help budding singers to correct their mistakes and perform better next time. I also enjoy film music very much.”

On her advice to upcoming and young artistes she said, “Believe in yourself.  Continuous learning alone will help. I believe in art for art’s sake. Hard work, concentration and passion will definitely bring laurels and recognition.”
