Rajahmundry: An AP sweetmeat maker is attempting to set a new world record by making the heaviest ever laddu, weighing 12,500 kg, as an offering to Lord Ganesh for Ganesh Chaturthi on September 5 at Gajuwaka in Visakhapatnam.

Tapeswaram-based Suruchi Foods proprietor P.V.V.S. Mallikarjuna Rao has been sending specially-made laddus free to the Khairatabad Ganesh idol every year since 2010.

Ingredients to make the heaviest laddu

Last year’s contribution weighed 6,000 kg and proved a tough task for the organisers to distribute to devotees after the idol’s immersion in Hussainsagar. Upon the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav organisers’ request, Mr Rao has confined the weight of the laddu this year to 500 kg.

However, he is putting his experience of making laddus of such enormous sizes to use by making the heaviest one yet. The organisers, who welcomed his idea, said that they would place it before the idol and then give it away as prasad to devotees. It will cost him Rs 30 lakh.

“I wanted to fulfil my ambition to make the world's heaviest laddu and gain entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. I want this rare honour for AP. I am mobilising the funds from friends and family,” said Mr Rao.

The heaviest laddu ever made until now weighs 11,115 kg: it was made by Arasuri Ambaji Matha Devaasthan Trust at Ambala in Gujarat.
