Hyderabad: Not one faculty member from the nearly 250 CBSE schools in AP and TS have been picked for the teacher awards this year.

Awards will be presented to 34 teachers from all over the country on September 4, a day ahead of Teacher’s day.

From the south zone, to which AP and TS belong, five teachers from schools in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have been selected for the award.

The eligibility criterion is a teaching experience of 15 to 20 years depending upon their current post, contribution to social causes, among others. The award carries a prize money of '25,000 besides a medal and certificate. These are different from the national teacher awards.

Asked about this, DAV Safilguda principal Seetha Kiran, a former recipient of the CBSE award, said the national recognition helped her get a five-year extension in service. She said teachers need not apply for the award, for which nominations are made by the CBSE itself.

Not having a single teacher worth for felicitation at national level is an embarrassment to Hyderabad that alone has nearly 100 CBSE schools, including the 20-odd high-profile international schools.
