Tamil Nadu CM recalls Jayalalitha's role in modernising police force

Jayalalitha stellar role, in fact, had made other states to emulate her, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said.

Chennai: Former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had played a vital role in modernising the police force and realising the evolving challenges and contours of threats, she had equipped the police with modern weapons like AK 47 and MP 5 to help police deal effectively against terror threats, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said.

Her stellar role, in fact, had made other states to emulate her, he said. “As far back as in 1991 she had sought Rs 30 crore from the Centre to modernise the police force and equip them to deal with terrorists and anti-nationals. Soon, other states emulated her,” Palaniswami said while distributing prizes and medals to the winners of the 9th south zone shooting competition held at the Chennai Rifle Club, one of the oldest such club, at Avadi here on Saturday evening. 

About 800 persons, including those from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands besides those from TN participated in the competition. 

“Events of such magnitude help one to transcend all barriers like caste, creed, linguistic and cultural differences and display the spirit of oneness. Such sports help one to inculcate finer virtues like discipline, self confidence, leadership, harmony, cooperation besides maintain health,” he said.
