864 more return home from Kodagu relief centres
District records moderate rain. Except NDRF other rescue teams to go back. Power, phone services restored in many areas.
Mysuru: Kodagu recorded moderate rainfall on Sunday but the situation in the rain and landslide-hit district is returning to normal with 864 more people at relief centres returning home.
Presently, there are 3,227 people lodged in 32 relief camps. Earlier, a total 7,594 victims were housed in 51 relief centres. According to Mr Gangaram Baderia, principal secretary and relief commissioner, revenue department (disaster management) the deputy commissioner of Kodagu may keep a team of NDRF and relieve all other rescue teams from different agencies including those of the Indian army, navy, air force, fire and emergency services, home guards, civil defence, and NCC on Sunday. The teams have so far rescued 4,450 people in Kodagu.
Meanwhile, Karnataka engineers association has assured the Kodagu district administration of free consultation for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the flood affected. As many as 1,048 out of 1,052 telecom networks including those of Airtel, BSNL, TSP, Idea, Jio and Vodafone are being restored. Chescom has restored electricity in most of the villages.
State government employees association head Mr H.K. Ramu who visited Kodagu on Sunday and said that they are donating their one day’s salary which will amount to Rs 102 crores, for the relief of people of Kodagu.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissoner P.I. Srividhya on Sunday said, “Despite an order from the district administration to stop accommodation of tourists in resorts, homestays and hotels in Kodagu, it has come to our notice that the owners continue to accommodate tourists and are even taking them to affected areas risking their lives. Hence the affected areas are being declared prohibited areas. I have directed the police to initiate action against those who violate it.”
