MEA summons Absul Basit after arrest of Pak spy in Delhi

Police sources claimed that the Pakistan High Commission official was arrested with confidential documents.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit in connection with the arrest of a Pakistani spy here.

The Delhi Police crime branch on Wednesday detained Pakistan's High Commission official Mehmood Akhtar in connection with espionage.

Mehmood Akhtar, who holds a diplomatic passport, has been detained at the crime branch office in Chanakyapuri and is being questioned.

The arrest was made on the tip-off by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

The official has the diplomatic immunity so the final decision would be taken by the Ministry of External Affairs, said police sources.

Police sources claimed that the Pakistan High Commission official was arrested with confidential documents.

Taking into account the seriousness of issue, the Ministry of External Affairs has summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit.

Akhtar has been working with the Pakistan High Commission in India for the past three years. Police suspect an insider of leaking information, plans and strategy papers to Akhtar.
