Kovai gears up to face monsoon

COIMBATORE: In a meeting chaired by Mr. Harmander Singh, principal secretary to Government in the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, mitigating steps to be implemented in order to make the textile city monsoon-ready were discussed in detail.

The meeting held here recently was attended by Sravan Kumar Jatavath Coimbatore city municipal corporation (CCMC) commissioner, Mr. K. Rajamani, district collector, and officials from other departments.

At the meeting it was discussed that low-lying areas in the city be identified and measures are in place, in such vulnerable areas to handle the heavy downpours. Men and machinery must be ready to handle water logging and uprooting of trees, the principal secretary said.

Moving the focus to water bodies he said "water bodies must be de-silted and channels connecting them must be clean to ensure free flow of water." Officials from the electricity board were advised to attend to disconnection of electricity and repairs if any without delay in this season.

Meanwhile, officials from the health department were advised that the primary health centers are stocked with medicines to treat cases of various fevers. The dean of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) was instructed to ensure that the hospital is stocked with medicines to diagnosed and treat patients who are diagnosed with water-borne diseases.

Stating that owners of commercial establishments and residential spaces must ensure that the rain water harvesting structures in their respective property are functional, the principal secretary mentioned quite clearly that fine will be imposed on violators.
