BENGALURU: With white topping of major roads creating traffic snarls across the city, the BBMP has temporarily suspended plans to concretise new roads. With elections around the corner, the Palike was all geared up to take up work on 32 km stretch of 15 arterial roads in the city.

Bengaluru Mayor Sampath Raj said, “We have been receiving a lot of complaints about traffic jams because of white topping works. We will not take up the work on new stretches, but will go ahead and complete the stretches on which the works have already commenced.”

He said, “50 percent of works have almost been completed on stretches like Hosur Road, Mysuru Road, Seshadripuram, Banaswadi and Vijaynagar. We will finish those projects. Works on new stretches will begin only if the local traffic police are able to find alternative roads to shift the existing traffic.”

Citing an example of how citizens are suffering without alternative roads, the Mayor said, “There are two underpasses on either side of Banaswadi Outer Ring Road – one at Horamavu and another at Ramamurthy Nagar. Because of the ongoing works, both these underpasses have been blocked."
