Hyderabad: It’s been three months since the TS government sought approval from the Central government to extend the service of DGP Anurag Sharma, who is due to retire on February 28, 2017.

The TS government wants to extend his tenure by nine months, and two weeks ago issued a notification in this regard.

But the state government is yet to hear from the Union home ministry whether its request for the extension has been approved.

According to the rules of the Department of Personnel and Training, there is no provision for extension of the service of a DGP after his retirement.

In a similar case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended the services of DGP Surajit Kat Purakayastha from December 2016 to May 2018 after getting approval from the DoPT.

The TS government follows the same argument as the West Bengal government, that the decision to extend the DGP’s tenure was taken abiding by the Supreme Court ruling that a DGP will have to remain in office for at least two years.

However, officials point out that the Supreme Court ruling did not say anything about extension of the tenure of an officer if he is set to retire before that.
