JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar's rocky visit
India's rising political star arrived in Hyderabad amidst mounting tensions at one of the city's biggest universities.
March 22: The University of Hyderabad was rocked by violent protests on Tuesday when vice-chancellor Prof. Appa Rao Podile resumed charge after being on leave for nearly two months, since the suicide of Rohith Vemula in January.
The students have been demanding his resignation since then. The police manhandled and lathi-charged students who then resorted to stone pelting. In the skirmish five policemen and scores of students were injured.
March 23: A day later, JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar was denied entry into University of Hyderabad by security personnel following prohibitory orders imposed by the university on Wednesday.
Mr Kumar said that it was on March 23 that freedom fighter and revolutionary Bhagat Singh was hanged and that is why he chose to visit UoH on the day to honour the sacrifice of Rohith Vemula.
March 24: Undeterred by having a shoe thrown at him, Mr Kumar asserted that he would continue fight for freedom and ensure that the Rohith Act was enacted to end caste bias in educational bodies
March 25: The National Human Rights Commission raised “serious concern” over action against UoH students and issued notices to the top Union HRD and Telangana government officials.
