Bengaluru: Driver held for mowing down traffic police on duty
Culprit worked as a driver for a transport company; Picked up from Mandya
BENGALURU: More than a week after a traffic constable was mowed down in a hit-and-run case, the Byatarayanapura traffic police arrested the absconding culprit on Sunday.
According to the police, the arrested person has been identified as Mahesh, who was working as a driver at a transport company in Srinagara in the City. He was driving a mini goods vehicle to make deliveries to various shops.
On March 17, constable Ravishankar S.A., a resident of Kommaghatta and attached to Byatarayanapura Traffic police station, along with a home guard Venkoba Rao were monitoring traffic at near NICE Road underpass near Devegowda junction. A truck mowed Ravishankar down and sped away.
The Byatarayanapura traffic police registered a case and tried to track the vehicle based on its registration number.
They found the vehicle belonged to a transport company and approached the company owner. He told police that their driver Mahesh was driving that particular vehicle on that day.
But Mahesh did not inform him about the accident. He told the owner that he has parked the vehicle near the company office and was going to his home town Mandya to celebrate Ugadi and would contact him after he returns, police added.
The police told the owner not tell Mahesh that they were searching for him. On Sunday, Mahesh returned to the city and contacted the company owner, who informed the police and this led to his arrest, police said.
He revealed that he was over speeding and lost control over his vehicle and mowed down the constable. Fearing that he would be attacked by the public, he fled the spot, police said.
