NEW DELHI: The Centre has banned the import of dogs in a bid to stop their breeding for commercial purposes as well as to manage the spiralling population of street dogs.

The notification which was published on April 25, however, allowed bringing in dogs which are pets, for research purposes and internal security requirements of the defence and police forces.

This is being seen as a positive step in view of increase in sale after breeding of species like Siberian Huskies, St. Bernards and Alaskan Malamutes, despite non-conducive climate conditions for them, leading, to their abandonment and suffering.
