Chennai: After holding consultation with its supporters, the VC Chandrakumar-led Makkal DMDK, a breakaway group of DMDK, formally announced its decision to merge with DMK on Monday. “To continue our political journey with self-respect, we have decided to merge Makkal DMDK with DMK. DMK alone would be able to bring change in Tamil Nadu,” Mr Chandrakumar told reporters here after a meeting of functionaries of the outfit along with former MLAs S R Parthiban and C H Sekar.

The date and venue of the merger would be announced soon after they meet DMK leaders M. Karunanidhi and M. K. Stalin, he said, adding that he would undertake a state-wide tour along with other leaders. “We are expecting many more DMDK functionaries at various levels and cadres will join with us when we merge with DMK,” he said. The rank and file of the DMDK were disillusioned with the party’s leadership for helping AIADMK to come back to power by joining alliance with PWA, he said.

The trio led a rebellion against Vijayakanth’s decision to align with People’s Welfare Alliance overriding the popular wish of the party men to join the DMK alliance. Vijayakanth, however, dismissed all the 10 rebel functionaries within hours. Later, they floated Makkal DMDK and joined hands with DMK. The fledgling outfit was given Erode (East), Mettur and Gummidipoondi seats by the DMK. However, Makkal DMDK candidates could not win a single seat though they contested on the rising sun symbol of DMK.
