Pondicherry port to resume cargo operations in August
The Puducherry port, which is all set to become a satellite port and would handle four lakh tons of cargo in the first year.
Puducherry: Union Minister for Road, Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari would inaugurate the cargo operations which will resume from the port here in the first week of August, Minister of Port M.Kandasamy said here on Tuesday.
Mr Kandasamy was talking to newspersons after reviewing the progress of commencement of container operations and preparatory works in the port area.
The Puducherry port, which is all set to become a satellite port and would handle four lakh tons of cargo in the first year and to be enhanced to ten lakh tons in subsequent years, the minister said.
The government had entered into a MoU with the Madras Port to handle containers. The estuary was being dredged and deepened to ensure the smooth passage of cargo vessels, he added.
The Government of Puducherry had awarded the contract to Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) to dredge 3.75 lakh cubic metres of sand and deposit it behind the Gandhi statue to restore the beaches in front of the town.
