Jipmer student ends life in hostel
According to D'Nagar police, Sumath (25), a native of Bengaluru, was a first year MD student of radiotherapy at Jipmer.
Puducherry: The body of a post-graduate medical student who allegedly committed suicide by injecting himself poison was found in a hostel room of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (Jipmer) here on Saturday.
According to D’Nagar police, Sumath (25), a native of Bengaluru, was a first year MD student of radiotherapy at Jipmer. Students staying in nearby rooms found his room locked and received no response when they knocked on the door. They informed the hostel staff.
The body was found after the door was broken open. According to L.V. Senthil Kumar, inspector of police, D’ Nagar circle, the student was allegedly suffering from depression and was taking treatment in a private hospital in Bengaluru. “Sumath joined MD in pathology in Jipmer on July 2 and later shifted to Radiotherapy course. He used to call his mother frequently and tell her he was not able to continue the studies,” the inspector said.
The student went home in Bengaluru, underwent treatment for depression there, but discontinued it half way and returned to Puducherry saying he wanted to continue studies here. The police found a note written by the student two days back in which he had said that changing the course was a false decision as the subject offered only limited opportunities. The body had been sent for post-mortem.
