15.06 per cent rise in passengers flying via CIAL in 2016-17

The total number of passengers who flew through the airport in the last fiscal was 89.41 lakh, an increase of 15.06 per cent from the last fiscal.

Kochi: Cochin international airport which is basking in the glow of opening its new international terminal (T3) having an area of 15 lakh sq ft at a cost of '850 crore, is also witnessing a jump in different sectors.

The total number of passengers who flew through the airport in the last fiscal was 89.41 lakh, an increase of 15.06 per cent from the last fiscal. Of this, 49.98 lakh are international passengers while 39.42 lakh are domestic passengers. This is against a total of 46.41 lakh international passengers and 31.29 lakh domestic passengers who passed through the airport in 2015-16. While the international sector witnessed a modest increase of 3.57 lakh over 2015-16, the domestic sector witnessed a quantum jump of 8.13 lakh. The total increase was by 11.70 lakh from the figure of 77.70 lakh in 2015-16.

Cargo movement also witnessed a rise in the last fiscal. Imports hit 7,239 tonnes and exports 64,011 tonnes in 2016-17 in the international sector from 4,634 tonnes and 63,095 tonnes respectively in 2015-16. The total numbers stood at 71,250 in 2016-17 against 67,729 in 2015-16. In the domestic sector, the receipt was 9,867 tonnes and dispatch was 3,291 tonnes in 2016-17 while in 2015-16 the receipt was 8,543 tonnes and 2,816 tonnes in the 2015-16 fiscal.  The international sector witnessed 5.20 per cent growth while the domestic sector witnessed 15.90 per cent growth.

Aircraft movement also increased in the international sector from 29,861 in 2015-16 to 31,691 in 2016-17, up by 1,830 numbers. In the domestic sector, it was  27,901 in 2015-16 which went up to 31,136 in 2016-17, up by 3,235 numbers. The overall increase was by 8.77 per cent.
