Ooty: The demand for Nilgiri grown flowers has begun to soar up as neighboring Kerala is gearing up for the traditional Onam festival in the first week of September. The flower growers and traders in the hills are looking forward to good tidings through flower trade related economy now.
It is needless to over-emphasize the big role played by the colourful flowers which are used for laying ‘pookalam’ and other Onam related decorations during the most auspicious celebrations for the Malayalees.
As those who are celebrating Onam are looking up to good availability of flowers, the demand for a few cut flower varieties such as Carnation, Gerbera, Alstromaria and other flowers like Marigold and Daliah have begun to show a good increase. Stating that the price of Carnation, Gerbera and Marigold will shoot up from this week, K. Mani, a flower trader here said that since flowers with colourful and relatively large petals are much required for laying flower carpets during Onam, there is good demand for these hill grown flowers.
