Hyderabad: Monkeys are on the rampage at Marredpally and Padmarao Nagar in the city since Sunday, causing a great deal of annoyance for residents of the areas.

A resident of Marredpally, Mallikarjun Rao complained that the monkeys kept hanging from overhead telephone wires in an attempt to climb down walls and enter houses. In the process, they also break and damage flower pots.

On Monday, the monkey menace at Padmarao Nagar was especially disturbing for school children. A group of around 20 monkeys or more arrived when the children were leaving for school resulting in a delay. Many of the children who were scared of monkeys ran inside their homes to hide and refused to come out later as well.

A resident of Padmarao Nagar, Pratyusha Reddy, mentioned that the presence of monkeys had increased recently. Monkeys get inside if the doors are open and often they take away the milk packets that are found hanging from the doors in the morning, she said. Unable to consume milk from the packet, they spill it all over. They also mess around with the dustbins and garbage can be seen strewn everywhere. It is really a difficult situation to handle, Reddy added.

“There used to be a park in Madhura Nagar colony, but, most of the trees were usually occupied by monkeys. So we have now stopped taking our children there,” she added.

Chief Veterinary Officer, GHMC, Dr Venkat Reddy explained that it was difficult to catch monkeys. “If monkeys see us catching other monkeys then they will run away and won't be visible for the next few days. Monkeys should not be killed, so one needs to be careful,” he said.
