Chennai: Four CCTV cameras were installed on MIT flyover in Chromepet following an order by city police commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan, recently.

Accidents at night are difficult to track on this stretch, especially hit-and-run cases. Cameras will help a lot in such situations, said a police officer from the Chromepet police station, adding that following a further assessment of other accident-prone areas, more tracking and surveillance devices would be installed.

These cameras, attached with the digital video recorders (DVR) will function round the clock. The recorded footage from the DVR can be tracked directly from the Chrompet police station, where a monitoring officer would keep an eye,” the officer said.

Mappedu, which is a school zone, will also be getting four cameras along with DVRs to ensure safety for the children and ensure traffic flow.

Residents of the Chromepet and Pallavaram have welcomed it. “This move was made after consulting the welfare associations here. We all appreciate it and believe that road accidents in the areas will be tended to sooner now. The expense is absolutely worth it,” said V. Santhanam, Federation of Civic and Welfare Association of Pallavaram and Chromepet.
