Vizhinjam port work to get back on track

Thiruvananthapuram: The work at Vizhinjam International Port will resume after being stall-ed for the past ten days due to granite paucity intensified by the deluge that struck the state.
The area leading to quarries were affected by floods. This has hit the work on the 3.1 km long breakwater. Also, the logistic mechanism in the state was devoted to relief works during the flood situation.
On Monday, the mining partners of Adani group had conducted a special pooja at Padmanabhaswamy temple seeking divine intervention to clear hurdles.
“We have approached the government to allow us to directly quarry gra-nite from the quarries at Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanam-thitta to beat the paucity of granite. We hope will soon get the permission to do so very soon,” said a source.
If all goes right the Adani group, the concessionaire of the project, can directly quarry the required volume of rocks from quarries. Between 60 and 80 lakh tonne was needed for the completion of the breakwater. The capital district alone was unable to cater to the full needs. This and cyclone Ockhi had hindered the work on and off. The project has already overshot the 1000 days deadline set for its completion.
