South zone Vice-Chancellors meet begins in Guntur
To focus on contribution of varsities in skill development.
Vijayawada: The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is organising its South Zone Vice-Chancellors Meet on September 27 and 28 at Vignan University in Guntur.
This meet is addressing the issues like, students not being able to acquire gainful employment, or engage in self-employment, lack of skill-based training programmes, lack of new courses with multi-disciplinary focus, and the custom-made programmes to tailor to the specific needs of students. The deliberations of the meet is to expect some tangible resolutions containing measures to be adopted by government, chancellors, vice-chancellors and other university functionaries.
Union minister Venkaiah Naidu was the chief guest on the occasion who inaugurating the meet. He delivered a key-note and released the Special Issue of the University News, a weekly journal broughtout by the AIU.
Prof. D.S. Chauhan, president, Association of Indian Universities, Prof. Furqan Qamar, secretary general, Association of Indian Universities, Prof. C Thangaraj, Vice-Cha-ncellor, Vignan University, along with 65 more Vice-Chancellors of the south zone comprising Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karna-taka and Tamil Nadu, made their presence in the meet.
The theme of the deliberation in the meet was “Contribution of universities to skill develpment, innovation and entrepreneurship.” The universities and other institutions considered to be imparting higher learning play a key role in preparing the graduates for entering into the job market and also to be self-sufficient in terms of equipping them with necessary skills and entrepreneurship remained uneven with sharp contrasts. Various surveys conducted by some of the leading organisations reveals that the increasing number of degree holders are not in a position to get jobs or self-employed.
This is a clear indication of mismatch between the demand and supply in the job market.
Hence, the meet has stupendous significance as the majority of the VCs from the south zone are expected to participate in the deliberations and from this galaxy of intellectuals they are expecting meaningful dialogue and resolutions for this crisis.
