Admission scam: CBI not to arrest Centac chief, health secretary till October 9

The CBI has been investigating the role of other Puducherry government and Centac officials in the alleged scam.

CBI in its FIR registered in Chennai said that the couple had amassed disproportionate assets worth over Rs 1.1crore during a check period of the year 2010 to 2016.

Chennai: The CBI has assured the Madras high court that the personnel will not arrest an IAS officer and chairman of Puducherry Centralised Admission Committee (Centac) Narendra Kumar, health secretary, Puducherry, B.R. Babu, till October 9, 2017, in connection with a PG-medical course admission scam.

When the anticipatory bail petition from the official came up for hearing before the vacation judge on Wednesday, Justice G.R. Swaminathan, the CBI special public prosecutor Srinivasan sought an adjournment of the case till October 9 and also gave an undertaking that the personnel will arrest them till then. Recording the submission, the judge posted that matter to October 9 for further hearing.

The CBI registered a case against Centac, chairman Narendra Kumar, health secretary B.R. Babu, and managing directors of various private medical institutions and others in connection with an alleged scam in admissions to PG-medical courses.

Puducherry Lieutenant-Governor Kiran Bedi sought a CBI probe into the admission of about 780 medical students in private colleges, alleging that it was a violation of the Supreme Court’s guidelines.

The CBI has been investigating the role of other Puducherry government and Centac officials in the alleged scam.
