Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday asked the state government to submit a statement related to deaths of inmates at various prisons in the state since 2012. The court was hearing a suo motu case with respect to unnatural deaths in jails.
The court has taken up the case following Supreme Court directions to chief justices of high courts to hear cases of unnatural deaths in prisons across the country.
The apex court had asked all high courts to register petitions on their own to find out whether the next kin of prisoners, who admittedly died unnatural deaths between 2012 and 2015, had been paid suitable compensation. If relief was not paid, the high courts have been told to award the compensation.

The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered notices to the state government, Social Welfare Department and others following a petition alleging misappropriation of funds by officials of the department in Kanakapura.
Status report
The Karnataka High Court has sought the status report from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on the removal of encroachment and desilting of storm water drains in Bengaluru.
The court passed the orders on an Impleading Application filed by Samarpana, a social service organisation. The judge adjourned the case to December 14.
