Akbaruddin Owaisi gives away Telangana state marriage sops
TRS government modified the scheme and instead of arranging mass marriages started providing monetary aid to households.
Hyderabad: AIMIM legislator, Mr Akbaruddin Owaisi distributed cheques to beneficiaries of Shaadi Mubarak and Kalyan Laxmi schemes in Hafiz Baba Nagar, Chandrayangutta. In total, he gave away Rs 3, 89,47,312 among 410 beneficiaries of Bandlaguda Mandal.
Addressing the gathering here on Wednesday, Mr Akbar Owaisi recalled that 22 years ago when he was contesting Assembly elections for the first time, he had assured the electorate to provide educational facilities to children in the constituency and promised to bear marriage expenses of at least 200 poor and orphan girls. He said that his track-record will show that he has done much more for the constituency than what he had promised.
He said that when Dr. Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy was at the helm he had sought the government to provide financial assistance to poor families and help them perform marriages of their daughters. During the YSR regime, the government arranged for mass marriages.
Mr Owaisi said that he was informed by people that the more affluent families were not keen on mass marriages as they thought that such wedding would malign their social status.
On his representation, TRS government modified the scheme and instead of arranging mass marriages started providing monetary aid to households where weddings were due to be held.
He said Chief Minister Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao should be appreciated as the amount of assistance is being enhanced gradually.
