CHENNAI: Two persons lost their lives as they were crossing a railway track in Korukkupet railway station, on Tuesday night.

Instead of using the foot overbridge, the victims were allegedly attempting to move to the opposite side by crossing the tracks between Wimco Nagar and Kathivakkam railway station, when they were hit by a fast-approaching express train leaving Central Railway station.

Korukkupet railway police said the two men identified as R. Kumar (30) and Gangana (70) of Kathiri Managalam, Ananthapuram, in Andhra Pradesh district. They were employed by the Southern Railway on contract basis for maintenance of railway tracks.

The bodies were sent to the Stanley Government Hospital for post-mortem, sources added.

“Commuters prefer to risk their lives by crossing the track, despite repeated pleas urging them not to do so. This results in fatal accidents,” told railway police personnel.

“We have taken several initiatives to educate people on the high risks involved in walking on the track, but it has evoked little response.” they added.

A case has been registered by Korukkupet railway police. Investigations are underway.
