Thanjavur: The Maharashtra developments have dealt a ‘death blow’ on the BJP which tried to come to power through short-cuts said C. Mahendran, national administrative committee member, CPI, here on Wednesday.

He told presspersons that BJP tried to trample upon democracy and constitution, but has been defeated.

Though the BJP and Shiv Sena are similar ideologically, they could not get along as there is no give and take policy.

“The Congress supported Shiv Sena to provide a stable government in Maharasthra for which the BJP is again responsible,” Mahendran explained.

He said that local body elections in Tamil Nadu should be held without any delay as per Panchayati Raj Act.

“It is said that Rs 10,000 crore is the loss to the state as the Centre has not released funds as there is no local body in the state. The Tamil Nadu government should conduct the polls without any delay,” he added.

Mahendran also welcomed the ONGC halting the proposed hydrocarbon projects in the region. “This is welcome and is a victory of the people who organised agitations against the projects,” he said.

He said that Cauvery delta should be declared a ‘protected agro zone’ by the Central government. “A special Act to this effect should be enacted in parliament,” he added.

Regarding smart city schemes in Thanjavur, Mahendran said the projects should be implemented without affecting the livelihood of poor people.
