Hyderabad: In order to ensure that people reduce the use of plastic and as part of Swachh Survekshan 2019, the Union housing and urban affairs ministry has launched the #Jhola Challenge. As part of this initiative, citizens can take the Jhola Challenge by carrying a jhola (reusable cloth bag or Tote) and refuse to use plastic bags for seven days. This eventually would reduce the use of single-use plastic bags.

Additionally, the “Jhola Champion City” title will be given to the winning city based on the number of Jhola Challengers. As per the Swacch Survekshan we-bsite, “Shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year.” The ministry said, “The goal of the Jhola Campaign is to refuse over 1 million si-ngle-use plastic bags by using the jhola power.”
