Chennai: The State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has directed Sri Ramachandra Medical College And Research Institute to return US $ 18000 (approximately equivalent to '11,72,638) to a NRI student, who discontinued his studies following ill health.

According to sources, Parasaran Rangarajan, a NRI student, was admitted in MBBS course in the University under NRI Quota in 2009. He paid US $ 1,43,000 (approximately equivalent to Rs 93,15,960) to the University in three instalments.
However, the university fixed the fee only as US $ 1,25,000 (approximately equivalent Rs 81,43,322.). He made an excess payment of US $ 18,000. Hence, he sought the management to return the amount.
He pursed only one year in the university. However, he paid fees for five and half years and hostel fees. As he was indisposed, he discontinued the course after one year. He sought the university to return the US $ 18,000.
On completion of trial, bench comprising Justice Dr S. Tamilvanan and K. Baskaran has directed the university to return US $ 18,000 to Parasaran Rangarajan. The commission also slapped a fine on the university.
