Luxury malls and high-rise buildings are situated in close proximity to N.S. Palya, BTM Stage 2, but its bylanes present a sorry picture of squalour. A huge patch of land has turned into an illegal garbage dump that has become a favourite haunt of stray dogs besides the breeding ground for mosquitoes. A resident complains that the garbage pick-up is in a poor state while several parts of the ward have dimly lit lanes, craters on roads and broken slabs on the pathways

Bengaluru: N.S. Palya, BTM Stage 2 may be located close to some luxury malls and high-rise buildings, but its bylanes reek of civic neglect. A huge patch of land in the midst of garment factories and residential houses has now turned into an illegal garbage dump and burning of trash is rampant. The place is a favourite haunt of stray dogs and the whole area is infested with mosquitoes.

"Several measures were taken to clean the area, but it remains the same. BTM Layout records the highest level of air and noise pollution. The garbage pick-up in some parts of the BTM is not at all up to the mark," said Santhosh Kumar, a local resident.

Santhosh said that of late the construction of residential and commercial buildings have exploded and the area and given rise to water scarcity.

Not only BTM Stage 2, but the ward in several parts have poorly lit lanes, craters on roads and broken slabs on the walkways.

"During elections the waste pick-up was hit in several parts of BTM including Tavarekere, S.G. Palya and N.S. Palya. This is unacceptable. The footpath near the garment units is covered with debris and garbage and this leads to the area being a breeding ground for mosquitoes and strays," said Namit Shirodkar, a resident of Thaverekere. Residents of BTM Stage 2 even alleged that the corporator is not reachable on phone.

Directing his tirade against the corporator, Namit said the public representatives should always be accessible. "What is the purpose of local self government if the corporator is not accessible? He should visit the ward regularly along with the MLA. The civic condition of the BTM Layout has been worsening over the years," he added.
