Hyderabad techie ends life in Australia
Kin alleges extreme dowry harassment.
Hyderabad: A techie from Hyderabad allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Australia. Twenty-seven-year-old Pendurthi Ramyakrishna, who got married to one Narla Mahath three years ago, hanged herself on May 17. Her family alleges that she was harassed by her husband and in-laws and was forced to commit suicide.
Ramya’s body was flown to Hyderabad on Friday accompanied by her husband Mahath and his brother. They handed the body over to Ramya’s family and immediately flew back to Australia.Ramyakrishna, a resident of KPHB had completed B.Tech (CSE) and married Narla Mahath of Warangal three years ago. Mahath was a businessman in Melbourne. After going to Melbourne, Ramyakrishna also started working. Ramya’s family claim that they gave an apartment worth '1.5 crore and a kilo of gold as dowry.
Later, a few months ago, when Mahath wanted to expand his business, they also gave '30 lakh to him. Ramya’s family alleged that her in-laws harassed her continuously to bring more dowry. “Though it started a few months after marriage, she never told her parents,” Ramya-krishna’s uncle P. Ravikumar said. On May 17, she spoke to her mother for about 40 minutes. A few hours later, Mahath called her parents and said that she had hanged herself. Her brother Chaitanyakrishna said extreme harassment had forced her to commit suicide.
“They also refused to give her body to us unless we gave him her passport,” he alleged, adding, that he was more interested in her life insurance money. Mahath’s family has denied all allegations saying she was worried about her family’s condition back home. “We wanted to perform last rites but they warned us not to attend the funeral. With no option left my son flew back,” Mahath’s father Subramanyam said.
