Kiran Bedi takes oath as Lt Governor of Puducherry
The post of Lt Governor of Puducherry has been lying vacant since the exit of Veerendra Kataria in July 2014.
Puducherry: Former IPS officer and BJP leader Kiran Bedi, who on Sunday took oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, said a 'prosperous union territory' is her mantra.
"I am here to give all I have, all the energy I have. We all visualise a prosperous Puducherry and that is going to be my mantra. We shall deliver this responsibility through three principal mantras," she said after the oath ceremony.
Bedi was administered oath by Madras High Court judge justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh in presence of Chief Minister nominee V. Narayanasamy.
The constitutional post was lying vacant since the exit of Veerendra Kataria in July 2014.
Lt. General AK Singh, LG of Andaman and Nicobar Islands was holding the additional charge of Puducherry till now.
Bedi, the first woman IPS officer in the country, is a recipient of Ramon Magsaysay Award for her contribution in building positive relationship between the police and the people. She is the fourth woman incumbent in Puducherry Raj Nivas.
Her appointment acquires added significance as a new government is going to take oath in the Union Territory in a couple of days.
