Hyderabad: Police officer climbs down into well twice to save 2

Karimnagar: A brave police officer climbed into a dark and narrow well and saved the lives of two persons who were stuck inside on Tuesday.

Without a thought for his own safety, Jammikuta circle inspector Srujan Reddy held a rope and got down the well that was about 60 feet deep. It has cement rings only for about 10 feet.

Sources said two persons, Ollala Mallaiah and Marepalli Ravinder, residents of Madipelli village of Jammikunta mandal, 58 km from Karimnagar, entered the well to deepen it but got stuck inside.

Given the depth of the well, there were concerns about how much fresh air was available after it became clear that they were struggling to breathe. There were also concerns that the well could collapse, as it was not pastered.

Upon informed about the situation, Mr Srujan Reddy rushed to the spot and informed the fire brigade. With no time to waste, he entered the well using a rope, with the support of his staff and local people.

“When I received information about the incident at 10 am I rushed to the spot along with my staff and found that no one was willing to enter the well to rescue them. With the help of a rope I entered the well.” He said that he tied the rope around Mr Mallaiah and Mr Ravinder to stabilise them and climbed up immediately. “It was difficult to stay for long inside the well,” he said, after spending time working in the dark.

Asked how he had learnt to climb the rope, Mr Srujan Reddy, 38, told DC that he had put to use whatever he had learnt during his training. He said the training had inspired him to dare enter the well.

By that time, the fire service staff had arrived. They dropped a ladder and Mr Srujan Reddy again entered the well and helped them come out. Mr Mallaiah and Mr Ravinder were shifted to nearby a hospital in an ambulance. Both are said to be recovering.

They had entered the disused well to deepen it ahead of the monsoon in an effort to revive it.

The video of Mr Srujan Reddy entering the well was uploaded and on social media and has gone viral, with netizens lauding the police officer’s efforts.
