Kollam: UDF’s promise to make a law on Sabarimala to override the Supreme Court order if they get power is another gimmick to fool the believers, said A.M. Ariff, the lone CPM MP from the state “As a lawyer, I am unaware of such a provision. The legislative assemblies do not have the power to override Supreme Court orders by making laws. Even if a law has been passed by the Parliament, the Supreme Court still has the right to challenge it if it is unconstitutional,” Mr. Ariff told reporters here on Tuesday.

He also opined that the CPM has never tried to challenge the believers, but failed to make the public aware of its stand on Sabarimala issue. “The LDF’s defeat is temporary and relative. It doesn’t mean that there will not be a comeback,” he added.

“The inference that the UDF’s victory was due to minority consolidation is not right. Secular people who have not taken any sides have also voted for the UDF fearing Narendra Modi,” he added.

Mr Ariff said he would give priority to the development of Karunagappally railway overbridge and Alappad drinking water woes.
