Road projects announced with focus on Kongu region

Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday unveiled several road projects and construction bridges with special emphasis on the Kongu region, besides schemes for capital Chennai and its suburbs.

The projects announced for the Kongu region by the Chief Minister, who is in charge of highways department, included an elevated corridor along Erode-Kangeyam road at a cost of Rs 300 crore and a bypass road in Coimbatore at a cost of Rs 185 crore.

Replying to the discussion on demand for grants to highways department, he said land would be acquired to lay bypass roads in Pollachi, Gobichettipalayam, Thuraiyur and Tiruvallur towns. He also announced a project for alternate route to go to Pollachi from Coimbatore. To ease traffic congestion at Erode town, a link road between Erode and Kangeyam would be laid.

An elevated corridor from Vadapalani to Ashok Pillar at a cost of Rs 380 crore and flyovers in Kundrathur, Madipakkam, Madambakkam and Korattur would come up, the Chief Minister said.

He said a bypass road from Agaram south to Perungalathur for a distance of 2.63 kilometre would be laid at an estimated budget of '30 crore. The four lane road from Oragadam to Walajabad would be converted into six lanes at a cost of Rs 185 crore, he added.

Mr Palaniswami also announced 11 railway over or under bridges in Tiruvallur, Vellore, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Tirunelveli districts at an estimate of Rs 529 crore. Besides, the Chief Minister came out with projects to build eight bridges across rivers at an estimated amount of Rs 145 crore.

They included bridges across Vellaru and Kedilam rivers in Cuddalore, a bridge across Kudamurutti in Thanjavur, a bridge across the Cauvery to link Namakkal and Erode districts, bridges across Guntar and Gountar in Madurai, two bridges in Villupuram district across Maniyaru and Malattaru. A total of 152 bridges over rivers would be built at a cost of Rs 400 crore.
